  • Significantly better battery life for most users
  • Faster loading and searching of contacts
  • Improved accuracy of the 3G signal strength display
  • Genius playlist creation (iTunes 8 required)
  • Option to wipe all user data after ten failed passcode attempts
  • Repeat alert up to two additional times for incoming text messages
  • Improved text messaging performance
  • Fixed bugs causing hangs and crashes for users with lots of third party applications
  • Decrease in call setup failures and dropped calls
  • Significantly reduced time to backup to iTunes
  • Faster installation of third party applications
  • Improved email reliability, notably retrieving email from POP,  Exchange push email

Of course the iphone is continually being introduced into new territories which has also helped boost global sales.

Demand is expected to peak before christmas with the arrival of the PAYG version of the iPhone expected in late November/early December, so expect stock shortages come christmas time.

According to mobile phone blog Omio, and its “very, very credible source on the inside”, the iPhone 3G “will be available on Orange in the UK, possibly as soon as October”.

O2 is understood to have the exclusive deal with Apple to sell the iPhone in the UK for 3 years, but speculation suggests that perhaps this deal was based on certain criteria – such as sales figures – being met, with Apple building in a clause to bring in other operators if terms were not reached.

Orange has secured similar deals to sell the iPhone in France – where it launched the first-gen device last year – as well as Austria, Belgium, the Dominican Republic, Egypt, Jordan, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Switzerland and Orange’s African markets for launches later this year.

Turning this rumour from almost absurd to at least worthy of reporting, is separate news from Bloomberg, that quotes MobileOne’s (Singapore’s smallest mobile-phone operator), CEO as saying they will offer the iPhone by the end of this year.

“I think, before the end of the year we will be carrying the phones in our stores”, Neil Montefiore said. “It will become available in all markets, with all operators.”

Use these tips to extend the battery life on your new iphone 3g:

  • Turn 3g function off when your not using it, you can do this on the iphone easily
  • Use wifi over 3g where possible
  • Turn down the screen brightness
  • Use the all new google search app instead of launching safari all the time

By using all or a combination of the above, you should be able to extend the battery life on the handset.
